WITIA Works 16.6

From the Presidents Desk

Well, what a year 2021 has been!

We have had to face more challenges and new challenges in both our professional and personal lives. Now that border restrictions have been eased in many countries, I am hopeful that 2022 will mean more travel opportunities for everyone. May you go forth and enjoy exciting new adventures throughout the world and may you see a resurgence of business to make up for lost time!

During the past year’s uncertain and socially distanced times, networking with and supporting our peers has become even more important for our members around the world. I take this opportunity to remind you to be active participants within our network: Reach out to other members in person, by phone and email, and connect with them via WITIA’s Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram platforms. Participate in our monthly Hand of
Friendship member Zoom meetings and promote your business by providing a virtual presentation. Contribute to news items or advertise in our publications. Invite your industry colleagues to join WITIA. Your contributions matter. Our combined strength is what makes us successful as an organization. As we approach the holiday season and begin to look ahead to
the New Year, there is no time more fitting to say thank you for being a member of our Alliance. I would like to acknowledge WITIA’s Board and Committee members for their continued encouragement and contributions. Special thanks also to WITIA’s Gold sponsors Eileen and Max Mellor of WORLDWIDE… more than just print Bundall, along with our fabulous and
valued Global Partners for their continued support. Last month WITIA surveyed members on our postponed 2020 Educational – thank you for your feedback. I am pleased to announce that WITIA’s Educational to Vietnam has now been rescheduled to September 2022. We are still working out a few details with our Educational host, Varini DeSilva of Ceylon Express International. We expect that the updated information on the Educational will be released in early January. Look for announcements in email broadcasts, on WITIA’s social media, and in our newsletters.
Thank you for your loyalty, support, and encouragement during the past year. On behalf of the WITIA Board and Committee, I wish you, your family, and friends a safe and happy holiday season.

Kind Regards, Leah

President

Member Profile

Sallie Khavere

PLAN IT HOSPITALITY SOLUTIONS, NAIROBI,KENYA

Sallie Khavere, born and bred in Kenya, still makes her home in Nairobi. She received her early schooling in various towns in Kenya but opted for a whole new weather profile – freezing, snowy and windy – when it came to her university education.

Talk about climate change!

Sallie braved the winters in St. Paul, Minnesota to study at St Catherine’s University, graduating in 1990 with degrees in Business and Foodservice Management. She must have become inured to the cold because she stayed on in the U.S. Upper Midwest, working for a few years as a Diet
Assistant in hospitals and also managing cafeterias on behalf of Best Foods Inc. Food service may have been the beginning but it was not the end of her story.

She writes, “I have an innate flair for the power of brands and associations,” so it was natural that she moved on to hospitality. She has remained there for the last 23 years, working in various management capacities for corporations such as Intercontinental Hotel Group (IHG), Tsogo Sun (South Africa) and Holiday Inn. She is currently the Lead Consultant at Plan It Hospitality Solutions, a hospitality-based consultancy that concentrates on operations, hotel management communications, public relations,
sales and conferencing. Sallie actively lends her know-how to various industry associations. She is currently the President of SKAL Kenya – Nairobi (2021), and an Executive and Founding member of Kenya Association of Women in Tourism (KAWT) – Membership chair. She is a member of the Tourism Professional Association (TPA), a committee member of the KTF Marketing, PR and Entertainment Committee and a Committee member (Marketing) for the Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers (KAHC). She is also amember of the Organization of Women in Trade (OWT) and of course, WITIA – to name a few! With her warm smile and direct gaze, Sallie is valued and beloved as a down to earth, roll-up-your-sleeves kind of person, the very person you want on your team. Her two core strengths, a love of
people and a talent for creating partnerships, align well with Hospitality. She adds the advantages of a keen eye for detail and a lively curiosity, assets that benefit both clients and family. When free time inserts itself into her consulting-association schedule, Sallie indulges her ‘inner farmer.’ She writes, “I am learning all things farming. Should you want your next clove of garlic, see me! I am also selling free range eggs and pure honey, some of it infused with mint, ginger and lemon.
A self-confessed closet chef, Sallie is the mother of a 25-year-old and a 17-year-old, explaining her “teenage revival of sorts”. Her go-to for a recharge? Wide-open spaces, traditions, and all things ‘old’. Sallie came to WITIA through her membership in the Kenya Association of Women in Tourism. “I have been a WITIA member for the past nine years and am proud to have participated in the WITIA Educational held in Kenya in 2012. The networks within WITIA and the freely shared information from its tourism professionals from different walks of life make WITIA the association to be in. With the
Educationals and webinars, you learn so much.”
